My “Full Comfort” Backpacking Gear List

This is the gear that includes all my “luxury” items, including a larger 20,000mah powerbank, my hammock for lounging, a portable chair, and my candle lantern. I carry this gear on shorter trips (1-2 nights) when I have a few extra pounds to spare, due to carrying less food. This has a base weight of 17 lbs (not including my camera gear, which adds an additional 2 lbs).

Backpack

- gregory optic 48 backpack - Best Backpacking Gear

Gregory Optic 48

I’ve found the Gregory Optic 48 to be the perfect balance of lightweight design and comfort for my 3-season backpacking trips. One of my favorite features is the side pockets—unlike many packs, these allow me to slide water bottles in horizontally, making them super easy to access without needing to take the pack off. The pack has a 48-liter capacity, yet only weighs around 2.5 lbs (1.1 kg), making it ideal for keeping my load light. It features an adjustable, ventilated back panel that keeps me cool on longer hikes, and a comfortable hip belt with pockets for quick-access items.

Note: Unfortunately, the Optic 48 is no longer available. However, the Gregory Focal 48 offers a very similar design and functionality, with updated materials and even more weight-saving features. Another good option is the Osprey Exos 48.

Specs:

Features: Top-loading design, adjustable torso, ventilated back panel, hip belt pockets, hydration reservoir compatible
Capacity: 48 liters
Weight: 2.5 lbs (1.1 kg)
Dimensions: 27.5” x 11” x 10.5”
