My Ultralight
Backpacking Gear List
This is my ultralight, 3-season backpacking gear.
While it doesn’t quite reaching a true ultralight “sub-10 lb” weight, this has a base weight of 13 lbs and is light enough for me!
Backpack
Gregory Optic 48
I’ve found the Gregory Optic 48 to be the perfect balance of lightweight design and comfort for my 3-season backpacking trips. One of my favorite features is the side pockets—unlike many packs, these allow me to slide water bottles in horizontally, making them super easy to access without needing to take the pack off. The pack has a 48-liter capacity, yet only weighs around 2.5 lbs (1.1 kg), making it ideal for keeping my load light. It features an adjustable, ventilated back panel that keeps me cool on longer hikes, and a comfortable hip belt with pockets for quick-access items.
Note: Unfortunately, the Optic 48 is no longer available. However, the Gregory Focal 48 offers a very similar design and functionality, with updated materials and even more weight-saving features. Another good option is the Osprey Exos 48.
Specs:
Features: Top-loading design, adjustable torso, ventilated back panel, hip belt pockets, hydration reservoir compatible
Capacity: 48 liters
Weight: 2.5 lbs (1.1 kg)
Dimensions: 27.5” x 11” x 10.5”
Materials: Lightweight 100D and 210D high-tenacity nylon

Shelter System
Tarptent Contrail
The Tarptent Contrail has been my go-to ultralight shelter for solo backpacking trips for years, offering a perfect mix of simplicity, weight savings, and livable space. Weighing in at just 24 ounces (0.68 kg), it’s astonishingly light yet still provides excellent protection against rain and wind. The single-wall design eliminates the need for a separate rainfly, cutting down on weight and setup time, while the front-entry design with a generous vestibule gives you room for gear storage and cooking in bad weather.
One of my favorite features of the Contrail was its adaptability—it pitched easily with a single trekking pole and could be adjusted for varying conditions, from full storm mode to a more ventilated setup in fair weather. While it wasn’t freestanding, I rarely found it challenging to stake out in most terrain, and the compact pack size made it easy to carry on ultralight trips. The combination of weight, simplicity, and weather resistance made the Contrail a true classic in the ultralight backpacking world.
Note: Unfortunately, the Contrail is no longer sold. However, the Tarptent ProTrail is its modern successor, featuring similar functionality with a more streamlined design, updated materials, and improved weatherproofing. If you’re in the market for a versatile, lightweight solo shelter, the ProTrail is an excellent alternative.
Specs:
Materials: Silnylon (waterproof, durable, lightweight)
Features: Single-wall design, front-entry with vestibule, trekking pole setup, adjustable ventilation
Capacity: 1 person
Weight: 24 oz (0.68 kg)
Dimensions: 84” (length) x 42” (width at head) x 30” (height)

The Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt 20°F is my favorite sleep system for ultralight backpacking trips, offering the perfect combination of warmth, versatility, and packability. The Revelation features premium 850-fill or 950-fill power down, treated with DownTek to maintain loft and warmth even in damp conditions. Its adjustable footbox and open-back design make it incredibly versatile, allowing you to customize ventilation and use it as a blanket on warmer nights. At just 19 oz (regular size, 850-fill), this quilt is ideal for 3-season adventures.
